Coaching Standards Code of Practice

Professional Standards & Client Care

This Code of Practice outlines the delivery of life coaching, the professional standards I adhere to, and what clients can expect from our coaching relationship. Its purpose is to foster clarity, transparency, and client care throughout the process.

Ethical Framework

My coaching practice aligns with the professional standards and ethical principles set forth by the Accredited Counsellors, Coaches, Psychotherapists, and Hypnotherapists (ACCPH) Code of Ethics, and is guided by recognized best practices within the UK coaching profession. This Code of Practice illustrates how those standards are applied in my work.

Scope of Coaching

Life coaching is a non-clinical, forward-focused process that supports various areas including:

- Clarity and direction

- Confidence and self-belief

- Motivation, consistency, and habits

- Behaviour change and accountability

- Lifestyle balance, energy, and momentum

My coaching is centered on choice, responsibility, and action, assisting clients in making progress that aligns with their values and goals.

What Coaching Is Not

It's essential to clarify that coaching does not equate to therapy, counselling, or medical treatment. I do not:

- Diagnose mental health conditions

- Treat psychological illness or trauma

- Provide medical or therapeutic advice

When client needs extend beyond the scope of life coaching, I address this openly and encourage appropriate signposting or referral.

Client Wellbeing and Safeguarding

I prioritize client care and wellbeing above all else. I commit to:

- Acting in the best interests of the client

- Working within my training and competence

- Maintaining clear professional boundaries

- Avoiding dependency or harm

In situations where safeguarding concerns arise, I will take appropriate and proportionate action consistent with ethical and legal responsibilities.

Confidentiality

All coaching sessions are confidential, with disclosure occurring only when:

- There is a risk of serious harm to the client or others

- Disclosure is required by law

- Safeguarding concerns arise

Any limitations to confidentiality are communicated clearly before coaching begins.

Professional Boundaries

The coaching relationship is both professional and time-bound. I will:

- Maintain a clear session structure and boundaries

- Avoid dual relationships that could impair judgement

- Encourage client independence rather than reliance

Clients remain responsible for their own decisions, actions, and outcomes.

Informed Consent and Contracting

Before coaching commences, clients receive clear information regarding:

- The coaching process

- Fees, cancellations, and session expectations

- Confidentiality and boundaries

- This Code of Practice

Coaching proceeds only with informed consent.

Responsibility and Accountability

Life coaching is a collaborative process where clients are encouraged to:

- Engage honestly and openly

- Take responsibility for their choices and actions

- Reflect between sessions and apply insights practically

Progress relies heavily on the client’s commitment and engagement.

Professional Competence

I am dedicated to upholding professional standards through:

- Ongoing professional development

- Reflective practice

- Staying informed of ethical best practices

This dedication ensures that coaching remains responsible, relevant, and effective.

Concerns or Complaints

Any concerns regarding the coaching practice are welcomed and taken seriously. Clients are encouraged to raise issues directly with me initially; where necessary, concerns can be escalated in accordance with the ethical framework of the referenced professional body.

Review of This Code

This Code of Practice is reviewed periodically to ensure alignment with professional standards and to reflect best practices in client care.

This Code of Practice aims to foster a safe, respectful, and empowering coaching relationship, grounded in clarity, integrity, and professionalism.
