Code of Practice

Professional Standards & Client Care

This Code of Practice explains how coaching is delivered, the professional boundaries I work within, and what clients can expect from the coaching relationship. It exists to promote clarity, transparency and client wellbeing.

Ethical Framework

My coaching practice operates in line with the ethical principles and professional standards of the Accredited Counsellors, Coaches, Psychotherapists and Hypnotherapists (ACCPH) Code of Ethics, and is informed by recognised best practice within the UK coaching profession.

This Code of Practice explains how those standards are applied in my work.

Scope of Coaching

Life coaching is a non-clinical, forward-focused process.

My coaching supports areas such as:

  • Clarity and direction

  • Confidence and self-belief

  • Motivation, consistency and habits

  • Behaviour change and accountability

  • Lifestyle balance, energy and momentum

Coaching is centred on choice, responsibility and action, helping clients move forward in ways that align with their values and goals.

What Coaching Is Not

Coaching is not therapy, counselling or medical treatment.

I do not:

  • Diagnose mental health conditions

  • Treat psychological illness or trauma

  • Provide medical or therapeutic advice

Where a client’s needs fall outside the scope of coaching, this is addressed openly and appropriate signposting or referral is encouraged.

Client Wellbeing and Safeguarding

Client wellbeing is always prioritised.

I commit to:

  • Acting in the client’s best interests

  • Working within my training and competence

  • Maintaining clear professional boundaries

  • Avoiding dependency or harm

Where safeguarding concerns arise, appropriate and proportionate action will be taken in line with ethical and legal responsibilities.

Confidentiality

All coaching sessions are confidential.

Confidentiality may only be broken where:

  • There is a risk of serious harm to the client or others

  • Disclosure is required by law

  • Safeguarding concerns arise

Any limits to confidentiality are explained clearly at the outset of coaching.

Professional Boundaries

The coaching relationship is professional and time-bound.

I will:

  • Maintain clear session structure and boundaries

  • Avoid dual relationships that could impair judgement

  • Encourage independence rather than reliance

Clients remain responsible for their own decisions, actions and outcomes.

Informed Consent and Contracting

Before coaching begins, clients are provided with clear information about:

  • The coaching process

  • Fees, cancellations and session expectations

  • Confidentiality and boundaries

  • This Code of Practice

Coaching proceeds only with informed consent.

Responsibility and Accountability

Coaching is a collaborative process.

Clients are encouraged to:

  • Engage honestly and openly

  • Take responsibility for their choices and actions

  • Reflect between sessions and apply insights practically

Progress depends on the client’s commitment and engagement.

Professional Competence

I am committed to maintaining professional standards through:

  • Ongoing professional development

  • Reflective practice

  • Staying informed of ethical best practice

This ensures coaching remains responsible, relevant and effective.

Concerns or Complaints

Any concerns about coaching practice are welcomed and taken seriously.

Clients are encouraged to raise issues directly with me in the first instance. Where appropriate, concerns may be escalated in line with the ethical framework of the professional body referenced above.

Review of This Code

This Code of Practice is reviewed periodically to ensure it remains aligned with professional standards and reflects best practice.

This Code of Practice is designed to support a safe, respectful and empowering coaching relationship, grounded in clarity, integrity and professionalism.
